The release of Aliens: Colonial Marines has been marred with reports that Gearbox may not have been the main developer on the project.
In the opening credits, the name of developer TimeGate Studios is shown. The involvement of the studio had been mentioned previously but according to an unnamed developer who had worked at Gearbox in the past (posted on texags.com in May 2012), the studio handled the entire single player element while also describing the game’s development as “a total train wreck”.
They also said: “Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past. I hope it proves me wrong, as I still have alot of friends still working at Gearbox, but I am expecting it to be average at best.”
In a talk with IGN, Randy Pitchford, Head of Gearbox said that TimeGate worked on “probably about 20 or 25 percent of the total time, if you take pre-production out of it, their effort’s probably equivalent to ours.”
Obviously as there is no way to prove that this person ever worked with Gearbox, we cannot believe them completely, but if it is true, this could be a massive knock for Gearbox as they have marketed and shown the game off under their own name.
